A part-time job sounds quite manageable when you’re planning university life from home.
A few shifts each week, some extra money coming in and perhaps enough left over for weekends. Easy.
Then you work until late on Tuesday, get home tired and remember there’s a 9 a.m. lecture on Wednesday. There’s also an assignment you’ve been meaning to start since Sunday.
Suddenly, those “few hours” of work feel slightly different.
Working while studying abroad can be useful, but whether it’s worth doing depends on more than the hourly pay.
First, Find Out Whether You Can Work
Before polishing your CV or applying at the café near campus, check the rules that apply to you.
International students may have conditions attached to their visa or immigration status that affect whether they can work, how much they can work, or the type of employment they can take. These rules vary by destination and can change.
Use official government and university information rather than relying on what somebody in a student group says.
“My friend told me it’s fine” isn’t particularly useful if your friend’s circumstances are different from yours.
Don’t Give Away Too Much of Your Week
Ten hours on a work schedule isn’t always just ten hours.
There may be a commute. You need time to get ready. A shift can finish later than planned. And somehow the evening you thought you’d use for studying has disappeared.
This doesn’t mean working and studying can’t coexist. Plenty of students manage both.
It does mean you need to be realistic about your course.
If you’re already struggling to keep up with lectures, readings and assignments, adding several work shifts probably won’t create more hours in the week. Something else will have to give.
Your degree is still the reason you’re there.
The Pay Isn’t Necessarily What You Have Left
Suppose a job pays reasonably well but takes 45 minutes to reach.
Now add transport. Maybe you occasionally buy dinner near work because your shift falls at an awkward time. There may be other employment-related costs depending on the job and where you’re living.
The job can still be worthwhile. Just compare what actually ends up helping your budget rather than looking only at the hourly figure.
A slightly lower-paying job five minutes from your accommodation could sometimes make more sense.
There Are Benefits That Aren’t Money
This part gets overlooked.
A student job can get you out of the international-student bubble for a while. You meet people you wouldn’t necessarily meet on campus. You get used to local workplace habits and, depending on the role, become more comfortable speaking with people from different backgrounds.
It can also give you something useful to discuss when you’re applying for jobs after university.
Not every part-time role will transform your career, of course. Sometimes a shift is simply a shift. That’s fine too.
Don’t Spend Wages Before You’ve Earned Them
This is probably the biggest budgeting mistake.
Before arriving, it’s tempting to calculate living expenses and then write “part-time job” beside whatever amount is missing.
But what if finding a suitable job takes two months?
What if the hours aren’t regular?
Ideally, essentials such as rent and basic food shouldn’t depend entirely on income from a job you don’t have yet. If you later find work, the money can give your budget some breathing room rather than rescuing it every month.
A Job Isn’t a Solution to Every Funding Gap
Part-time income can help with everyday costs. A larger education-funding shortfall is a different problem.
If you or your family are looking at financing in India, you may come across banks as well as an NBFC, or Non-Banking Financial Company, offering certain financial products.
Don’t mix the two decisions together. A part-time job concerns your current income. Borrowing creates a repayment commitment.
If you’re considering a particular financial product, you can Check your eligibility against the provider’s current requirements. Meeting those requirements doesn’t guarantee approval, and qualifying doesn’t tell you whether borrowing is appropriate for your circumstances.
Read the applicable interest, charges and repayment terms before making that decision.
So, Is Working Worth It?
For some students, absolutely.
For others, the extra money isn’t worth giving up the study time, especially during a difficult semester. You may also find that working makes sense during one part of the academic year but not another.
There’s no prize for being the busiest person in your student accommodation.
If you can work legally, find a job that fits around your course and still have enough time to sleep occasionally, a part-time role can be a useful part of studying abroad.
Just don’t agree to the Saturday morning shift until you’ve remembered what time Friday night’s shift actually finishes.
